Blepharoplasty: With Eyes Wide Open!

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

If there were one thing about your face that you could improve, what would it be? Chances are — your answer would be your eyes! The eyes can express more than mere words ever could. With one glance, a person can immediately show what’s on their mind — anger, longing, doubt, joy and contentment can easily be expressed through the eyes. However, since it is this part of the face that communicates so much without creating a sound, it is also the part of the body most prone to life’s wear and tear.

Words, or the lack thereof, may get in the way of proper communication just as emotions are not expressed well because of sagging skin around the eye area. Your expressions become muted and you appear tired and older than you really are. Nothing adds years to one’s face as droopy eyes. A person can look prematurely old because of the poor condition of the area around the eyes. Luckily for us, we live in the day and age when these concerns are simply a matter of deciding on a remedy and going for it.

BLEPHAROPLASTY AND ITS BENEFITS

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), whether it be the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid, is often performed to correct some perceived imperfection that impacts on the way an individual feels about his or her appearance. A blepharoplasty procedure can take years off a person’s looks—so much so that some patients may be perfectly content with the results as opposed to having a full face-lift. The advantages of having blepharoplasty include:

  • The procedure can restore the youthful look to the eyes by removing unwanted fat and excess skin from the eyelids—making the eyes look healthier and livelier.
  • It can also correct puffiness in the upper eyelids that cause the eyes to appear tired.
  • It may diminish fine wrinkles and lines—the bags that sometimes appear beneath the eyes can also be removed.
  • There is considerable improvement of one’s peripheral vision with the removal of droopy, sagging skin that obscures the natural fold in the upper eyelids.
  • Patients find that improvement in the overall appearance of the eyes will boost one’s self-esteem.

BLEPHAROPLASTY FOR ASIANS

Estimates show that 50-75% of all Asians are born with a single eyelid; that is, they lack the crease in the upper eyelid. The demand for blepharoplasty among Asians is generally due to a desire for making the eyes appear larger and more vibrant, and not so much because of a desire to look more Caucasian. Generally, overall appearance that is still congruent to one’s Asian ethnicity is desired. For women, upper eyelid surgery can make it easier to apply eye makeup.

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR BLEPHAROPLASTY?

If you’re seriously contemplating to have a blepharoplasty done, you should consider the following:

  • Do you have excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids?
  • Do you have loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids?
  • Does the loose skin impair your vision?
  • Do your eyes appear puffy—making you look tired?
  • Is your eye area surrounded by fine wrinkles?
  • Do you have eye bags and dark circles under your eyes?

If you have one or two problems as mentioned above, you are a potential candidate for a blepharoplasty — as this type of surgery can correct these problems.

WHAT OUR DOCTORS SAY

Dr. Joel Unson, a plastic surgeon at Beverly Hills 6750 says, “When undergoing any procedure, the most important thing for a patient, is to know everything there is to know about the operation. Being fully informed of the procedure, its risks and benefits, and being mentally sound is almost as important as being physically prepared. You have to set realistic goals in terms of what you want to achieve. When talking to your doctor, be very specific in telling him what you exactly want. Good communication between you and your physician will facilitate the attainment of the results you want to achieve.”

Dr Rene Valerio adds, “Most eyelid irregularities may be corrected through surgery — though some other treatments may also be considered in conjunction with having a blepharoplasty. For example, if the upper eyelid condition is accompanied by sagging of the eyebrows, then a brow lift or even an endoscopic forehead lift may be recommended. Smoothening of wrinkles around the eyes, like “crow’s feet” may be accomplished with Botox, chemical peeling or laser re-surfacing procedures. Dark circles beneath the eyes caused by pigmentation may be treated with fillers such as hyaluronic acid or a fat transplant, as well as with a bleaching solution or a chemical peel.”

Summer beauty secrets from Beverly Hills 6750: Accent Body Contouring

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

The beauty experts at Beverly Hills 6750 share more beauty tips and treats for the hot, hot summer! You’ve read about Permasilk Laser Hair Removal — now let’s talk about getting that to-die-for slim and sexy body to show off at the beach.

A common problem women face, especially when getting older, is sagging skin. As age sets in, most women lose the tone of their skin and muscles. Working out at the gym helps preserve the body’s firmness and the skin’s elasticity – along with the right diet, lots of water, and enough rest and sleep. Sometimes, though, nature needs a little push. Beverly Hills 6750 offers just that little boost to get back that tight, fit body with Accent Body Contouring.

The Accent machine is a radio-frequency device that has a bipolar head, which delivers superficial heat to tighten skin on the face and body. A unipolar head is also used to penetrate deeper into tissues to reduce fat and cellulite on hips, buttocks, abdomen, and arms. It’s designed to safely and effectively address cellulite and reduce fat as well as rejuvenate, even out, and tighten skin.

The procedure usually takes less than an hour per area. Results are visible almost instantly as average patients see a reduction of one to two inches in the treated areas shortly after the session. Patients also notice improvement in texture, a reduction in skin dimpling, and tissue tightening.

The best part? No cosmetic surgery is needed. As a result, there is no long recovery period, no downtime — you can achieve that celebrity body fit for the beach at any season without breaking a sweat. True, the summer’s nearly over, but a hot figure is always in.

Beverly Hills 6750 supported a concert for Gawad Kalinga’s Air France/KLM Village at Merk’s Bar last May 4 along with PCSO, Arce Dairy, and Cakes by Chef Phillipe. Gracing the gig with soul and jazz renditions were Beverly Hills 6750’s own Mia Ong, Richard Merk, Ricky Davao, Chef Philippe Agnese – who sang Tagalog songs – and the star of the evening, Ramiro Arce Romero. The show was produced by Mayenne Carmona of The Philippine Star.

From the Manila Bulletin:

“Rambo at Merk’s” will mark the comeback of Ramiro Arce Romero, better known as “Rambo” by close friends. It will also be his debut at Merk’s Bar & Bistro, owned by Prince of Jazz Richard Merk and his wife Roni Tapia-Merk. “Rambo at Merk’s” happens on Tuesday night, May 4.

Rambo is a graduate of the UP Conservatory of Music, major in Voice. After graduation in the late 80’s, one of the highlights of his fledgling career in music was a mainstay role in Armida Sigiuon Reyna’s popular “Aawitan Kita.” From Filipino opera, he shifted to a new style as a singer. With the “Sinatra” timber in his voice, Rambo chooses to sing old time favorites that appeal to the young and old alike. Rambo’s repertoire of love songs include “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” and “The Wonder Of You” among others will surely touch every body’s heart. By the way, Rambo has a regular gig every Wednesday evening at the family owned KKK Restaurant/Bar at Midtown Robinsons Manila.

Guests artist is Chef Philippe Agnese, a French pastry chef whose passion is music. He graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia with masters in Jazz Improvisation. He had a short stint in the band, Midlife Crisis, playing at Chef and Brewer in Ortigas. Today, Philippe has a coffee shop at the ground floor Erechem Bldg., Rufino cor Salcedo St., Legaspi Village.

Another guest artist, Mia Ong, is a marketing executive of Beverly Hills 6750. Mia was a singer with the bands Soul Cage and Bureau.
